Practice Time! Pre-Camp Post

So tonight was game one of a basketball league I joined on campus. This is probably the closest thing to an official game I've played since 8th grade.

I was pretty embarrassed with my performance tonight. I went 0-2 and 50% of my screens were beyond pointless. I've slowed down my release to maybe 3 seconds so that my shot is more relaxed and smooth, unfortunately my second shot got blocked because I took so long and it doesn't help that my guard was 6'8" with a wingspan of intimidating length.

My offense wasn't the only thing stinking up the gym tonight though, my defense, my pride and glory, was just as horrible. We ran Zone Defense, what a train wreck that was for me. I remember back to a couple months ago I was all about the Zone but since I've conditioned myself to be able to run man-on-man I've never had to run zone. Basically I was still mentally playing man defense while physically attempting to play zone, if you can picture that... it's anti-zone defense. It was so bad that I got yelled to Box Out a couple times =[, felt horrible. Had a couple "I don't know what's going on anymore" moments. Hopefully we don't have to run zone again anytime soon.

Thank the Lort for having amazing teammates, these guys shot 70-80% at the arc, carried me real nicely. Hopefully with some practice I'll get use to this team, I'll hold my own, and our team will be even better. Till next game.

A few reasons why I love the NBA

I study it like physics, I follow it like a drama series, and I want to learn about everyone like gossip. Then I'll post an example of the stuff I read.

1. The Science

I don't watch just to see the emotion play out. Basketball is a beautiful science. Football is too, but I don't know nor bothered with learning about football's X's and O's. I know when a football commentator say how nice a play was, I appreciate them doing a freeze frame and drawing movement lines so I know what's going on. Otherwise I do what all newbies do: watch only the ball. When I lived with my roomates in college who weren't NBA fans, I ask them what they watch when they see the Lakers. They said they watch whoever has the ball. I then told them I try to watch all five players at once with my peripheral vision. Thank God for different colored jerseys or else I would be confuzzled. In fact, many times when someone shoots I can tell they're shooting from my peripheral, I instead focus my eyes on the inside and see how the players are boxing out and paying attention to which players fight really hard and how they get rebounds.

A team ultimately gets points from the ball going in, but to set up that jumpshot or post up, you need to run an offense, and that is where activity from the ball is most important. The Utah Jazz have the most awesome offense in my opinion. Every one of the five guys is involved in every play. The Laker's triangle is nice too, but too often they give an isolation to Kobe or Gasol and then it relies on one on one skill. Other teams make greatness from scratch through supreme point guards. Watch the Boston Celtics and watch Rajon Rondo. Five times a game he will make you say "Holy **** how did he just make that pass?"

Lakers defend a Thunder play from studying all their old game videos:

2. The Emotion and Drama

I like rooting for underdogs, except when its against my team. I really do like the Thunder, they're young and they play with alot of effort. I like watching series that are even and have hated rivals (Spurs vs Mavericks). I like reading stories about team's trash talking each other. Hate is fun, not real hate, but sports hate. I love to hate certain teams. And even when I'm a neutral observer, I can sense the hate between division rivals, and it makes it more fun to watch.

Joakin Noah takes a dump on the city of Cleveland like a WWE villain:

3. Learning about the People

It's really nice to read stories about the people and their effects on the team outside of the scoreboard. X's and O's are important but its chemistry that creates hard work and success. Shannon Brown was the favorite to win the dunk contest because of ESPN articles that chronicled his hard work on coming to the NBA and making a spot for himself on the Lakers rotation. Too bad Shannon Brown SUCKED at the dunk contest.

I like reading about people because I choose my favorite players based on their personality. It's why I absolutely despise Michael Jordan. It's why Derek Fisher is my favorite Laker. Why do you think NBC wastes air time during the Olympics to show you each Olympian's personal story? Once you make that bond you will root for that person even stronger.

Scott Brooks of the Thunder wins coach of the year for being a great coach for a young team

Kobe has a real friend on the Lakers!

Being Honest is Heart Breaking

9:30 - 12:30Pm = Basketball in Diamond Bar

2:30 - 4:20Pm = Friend's Eagle Project near CSULA

6:00 - 9:00Pm = The Getty Center

Went to the Getty Center to look at some pottery for my Art class, intro to ceramics. Have to write a 4-6 page paper on a piece of pottery that I am interested in. Usually I'd find an easy way out, google or something along the line. But I've never been to the Getty Museum so I didn't mind going. Long story short, the pottery exhibit was closed for renovations and wont be open till May.

the playoffs, the worst invention for little kids

There are 16 teams in the NBA playoffs. 15 of them will not win the championship. This means over 90% of little kids who are fans will cry. Even if your team does win it all... I will tell you something out of personal experience: the happiness of winning a championship does not stay in your memory as long as a losing a championship. Losing in 2004 to Detroit still burns me to this day.

Granted, I am lucky to be a Lakers fan. The Lakers win the championship quite often. But I have great empathy for Knicks fans of the 90s, Kings fans of the early 2000s, or Suns fans of today. Their teams are good but not good enough. It sucks to lose every year after you've gone far in the playoffs. It would be alot less heartbreaking to be a Clippers fan for sure because "Happiness = Results - Expecations" You only get hurt if you end up with alot of expectation.

I feel that I've grown a little bit when it comes to pro sports. I can honestly say I don't mind if the Lakers don't win the championship this year. There are many teams that I would be really happy to see win it. If not the Lakers this year, I want Phoenix to win it, then Utah 2nd, then Boston 3rd. All those three have the same description: underdogs with old veterans who can deny all the nay-sayers.

Can the Lakers win it all this year? Maybe. They have a good shot.

However these are the teams that I feel will beat the Lakers: Portland, Denver, Cleveland, and Boston. Luckily for Lakers fans, those teams also have other teams that will beat them.

This is what I love about the NBA playoffs, its all about matchups. It's like rock-paper-scissors. Orlando can easily beat Cleveland and Boston, but I'm sure the Lakers can beat Orlando. Also, Utah can beat Denver, but the Lakers will own Utah.

I just hope the Lakers get the best path possible:

1st round: OKC Thunder (yay we got them!)
2nd round: Utah Jazz
3rd round: Phoenix Suns
Finals: Orlando Magic

We are about to ball, salute you!

MacLovin Tip #1

Willy Bob will help you to ask a girl on the first date. But then what? What should you do on that first date? Have no fear, MacLovin is here. First of all, you should do activities that let the girl know who you really are. You can take her out to the local park and have her run 5 on 5 ballin with your boys. Then you can take her home and take turns playing Modern Warfare for three hours. Getting hungry? Eat where you normally eat, whether it be some pho, or 79 cent tacos, or the McDollar Menu. Surprise her! Remember you want her to know who you REALLY ARE!

However I will also advise you to be more sweet and nice than you normally are. First impressions are important. You can tell her something like "I'm really excited to be here with you because kids always ask their parents what happened on their first date". Or you could tell her how beautiful she is every five minutes. It's the perfect way to break those awkward moments. When you got game like that, there is no such thing as an awkward moment. Observe:

Girl: I'm getting bored of playing gun games, do you have a Nintendo Wii?
You: The Wii is for sissies
Girl: umm ... okay...
You: *eeeeyyyttt*
Girl: .....
You: Girl you so beautiful. Like got-damn!

I know what you're thinking: When do I introduce her to the parents? Well you should wait for the perfect time. I think an ideal time is when the round ends. This gives you one minute to put down your controller. You can take the girl and introduce her to the parents, have some small talk for 40 seconds, then run back before the next round begins.

Follow these instructions and I guarantee you that girl will have a very STRONG impression of you by the end of the night. But you don't have to thank me, I just enjoy helping my fellow man.

Abs Diet + New Hobby

For those of you who don't know, the Abs Diet is a book published by the guy's from Men's Health. It's a great book because it teaches you something that no other diet does. In a way, this form of "diet" is like a smart investor. The average joe will go to work for his money (no work, no money). the 401k Joe will make his money work for him (no work, still getting money). This applies to exercise. I really pity the people who run on treadmills and eat paltry amounts of food. Sure they're keeping off fat, but they're also keeping off MUSCLE.

A skinny person on a treadmill can burn a few hundred calories an hour. A fit person can burn 50 calories an hour PER POUND OF MUSCLE when he's typing up a blog for BiA.

In addition to Muscle being seksi, it is also the body's equivalent of a high interest investment. Your body continues to burn calories long after you finish some sets at the gym. Each time you work out, you also build more muscle (which means more calorie burn). You see the benefits? It's like an accumulating interest account! You can see that adding muscle will give you more calorie burning power. But you must eat healthy in order to let your muscle stay stable. If you starve yourself, your body will cut down on the muscle to save the fat!

Luckily for me in my teenage years, I figured this form of diet without even knowing. I remember when I was a fatty that I would run on a treadmill for like 30-60 minutes and burn only 300-700 calories. God good if you eat a double double with fries you've already consumed more than 700 calories. It was really depressing to count calories so I didn't. I just decided to cut out any unhealthy food and eat mom's food when I was hungry in small amounts. I would eat often but I never really downed chips because I never let myself get that hungry with all the healthy food surrounding me (steak, chicken, yogurt, fruits, shakes). Luckily for us, Vietnamese food is very healthy! We eat food that's seasoned instead of injected with grease (Chinese), and our vegetables are much more healthy than the American salad. The only downside is white rice. You gotta cut down on white rice to a small bowl a day. Or can switch to brown rice.

Anyway, that's the mentality you gotta have.

1- Eat yummy food that's not fatty (you can use common sense here). This means home made steak is ok, but not hamburgers. Baked potatoes with some cream cheese and bacon bits are okay, but french fries are a downer. Make your own fruit smoothies, it's cheaper and healthier than Jamba Juice.
2- Plan your meals before you get hungry, you don't resort to fast food or chips.
Also by planning out your meals, you have increased willpower over tempting snacks.
3- Eat whenever you feel hungry, don't starve yourself.
Just keep your meals smaller than you would normally eat. Small multiple meals is better for you than a few big meals. The multiple mini-meals promote muscle growth and reduce fat storage.
4- You have to do some form of exercise a couple times a week
In addition to looking better, you'll also enjoy your food and sleep much more.

Other than the healthy mentality, the book also gives you two really important pieces of information

1- Foods that are yummy and healthy (so that you don't have to resort to common sense, but rather, have proven scientific foods).
2- Sets of exercises that give you the most return with limited input

In the end, the book gives you the mentality to make your body work for you, as opposed to only working for your body! I highly recommend this book!

My new hobby

I went to Speedzone the other day and tried out the Grand Prix track. It's a track that is very curvy and it requires you to have a driver's license to drive there. The cost is affordable in my opinion, they charge two dollars a lap.

They state that their carts go up to 35 miles an hour, but I don't even think I was able to reach max speed. I love this compared to the stupid carts they have for the kids. Those are so slow that the best strategy is to hug the curves. Here if you hug the curves you will CRASH. Each lap lasts around 50 seconds. I did five laps when I was there. The best part is that they some kind of equipment to time your laps, then it shows up on a big scoreboard. My first lap I took it slow to see what the track was like so my time was around 52 seconds. On my second lap I crashed into a wall from going too fast so I finished with like 60 seconds. I kept on cutting time as I found out more efficient driving lines and where I could go faster without crashing. My last and best time was 46 seconds. They said the all-time track record is 36 seconds which is pretty epic because I don't even know if I can cut my time back to 40 seconds, but I will definitely be back to try! I also need to try out their drag racing thing, they are stick shift cars that accelerate from 0-70 in 3.5 seconds!

Nice Guys Finish Last: He Said She Said

Have you ever heard a girl say "I just want to be with a nice guy who cares about me" and end up seeing her with what you would consider a douchebag? Don't get your undies in a jumble because she's actually not lying and really means it. Your definition of a nice guy is probably different from her's...and let me tell you that your version of a nice guy would finish last!

When you fellas think of a "nice guy", you probably think of a guy who is selfless and would do anything for that special girl. Only problem here is that this "nice guy" comes off too available and accommodating, which makes him appear insecure, desperate and needy for the girl's attention. If you're doing and giving everything without her doing or giving anything, how does that make you look? That's right...like a doormat to be trampled on. lol

A girl's perspective of a "nice guy" does NOT mean one who:
- is nervous and shy around people
- lacks social skills (no game = no bueno)
- calls or wants to hang out all the time (being clingy doesn't allow time for her to miss you)
- accepts all demands from her (appears submissive and weak)
- is always asking her what she wants (instead of you being a man and taking the lead at times)

What she DOES refer to is a guy that:
- is confident in front of girls and other guys
- knows how to flirt (gotta be smooth!)
- enjoys time with the girl, but also has time for himself and his goals
- is funny without being over the top

You can be a nice guy to girls...you just need to know how to interact and attract them. A guy who is emotionally strong (although physically wouldn't be bad either ;D) and confident is definitely desirable. Sure the guy that Juanita is with is a douchebag, but I bet he is more confident and outgoing compared to that "nice guy".
