Someone That I Used to Know

This is such an awesome cover of Gotye's "Someone That I Used to Know"

They are playing the song on one guitar, covering high and bass notes, and even knocking on wood for drumbeats. I love the guy at the right, he just holds the end and looks like a boss. All he does is flick the guitar for some pitched notes every once in awhile.

Epic Orchestra Music [1]

I think all of us have pretty well rounded music tastes. But for me, the most epic music comes from video games and movies. I like epic soundtracks, and it's even better when they are played by a live orchestra. Anyway, for the first edition, there's no more obvious choice than Guile's theme. There are tons of versions out there, from 8-bit to metal to techno, but this my favorite.

This sounds like it belongs in a Batman movie. With the deep foreshadowing notes at the beginning, I can imagine Bain about to kill Batman (in the next Dark Knight movie) then the drumbeat starts and Guile comes in and flashkicks Bain to the face. Then Batman and Guile fight off the thugs... for AMERICA.

This music is also appropriate for doing epic things. SONIC BOOM! = the ripple waves when the deuce hits the water

Happy New Year

So I learned something new today. The "Happy New Year" song played on Vietnamese radio was made by ABBA, the American disco group. I had no clue, I thought it was a song made popular on Paris by Night or something. Second thing, from reading Tet traditions on wikipedia, this song is super popular in Vietnam during Tet. I didn't really believe it I saw the comments on the below video. Things like "Happy New Year from Hai Phong City". This is pretty funny, it's almost kinda like Borat and "Everybody Dance Now".

Musica Classico!

Browsing the inter webs is a lot more exciting when i got this music playing!

Like a Skyscraper

I heard this song tonight on the radio while I was preparing some things for Thieu Nhi tomorrow.

This song is so beautiful, because I already had 9/11 in mind.

"You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I'm made of glass
Like I'm made of paper
Go on and tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper"

I stopped doing what I was doing and just sat in my chair and listened. It was the raspy voice that was full of heart and emotion that caught my attention. I didn't know who it was because I didn't know any pop stars who sang like that, except maybe Hayley Williams from Paramore, but it wasn't her voice. This type of voice fits Christian rock. But anyway a quick search on youtube found that it was Demi Lovato of Disney fame (probably in Miley's shadow). Anyway I've heard of before but never heard any of her songs before. Kudos to making a great song Demi. I'm sure you'll be making nice royalties as radio stations across the country play this song tomorrow (err today).

This song connected to me on so many levels. At the personal level it reminds me that there is a will of fire deep within us that no one can extinguish. It reminds me that hatred put towards us will not win. The ultimate victory is to rise above the hate and to love yourself and spread it. I believe this song is a great metaphor for the way our nation can rise above terrorism after ten years since 9/11. There is no victory in hate, there is only victory in love.

By the way, the victims of the war on terrorism are now triple the initial amount of 3,000 on the day of the attack. About 6,000 servicemen have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since then up until now. Let us pray for the souls of the departed, for peace and successful democracy in the two new nations, and for our soldiers to come home safely.

Lost?

A little guide for Rowland.

How did I miss this Internet meme?

Apparently in May-June of 2010, there was a meme called "Guile's theme goes with everything". Which means that if you play the theme song of Guile from Street Fighter, it can match with nearly every video. Last night I was reminiscing of old video game songs, and so I typed in stuff like Sonic, Streets of Rage, and literally typed in "Guile's Theme" because he has my favorite stage background and music from Street Fighter 2. At first I thought these videos was a joke but then I realized how amazing the song goes with the everything! Here are my top picks

Since SF is a fighting game, its obvious that Guile's theme goes with other fighting scenes. In this scene, Rambo has a Sonic Boom machine gun.

Similar to fighting is dancing, which also has a fast beat. So the song also fits. Example:

It also works in tense thinking situations due to its upbeat nature. Example:

But what about something random, like TV show intros? I saw videos with Friends and Full House which were really funny, but this one takes the cake.

Guile plus Chuck Norris is so American ! AMMURICCA !

my guilty pleasure

Mac's top 3 Karaoke songs (this list may change in the future, but right now these are at the top). i came up with this post idea because last night, two out of these three songs were on the radio.

im not the type to sing along to modern songs on AMP or KIIS, i usually just nod my head to the beat. But if I'm listening to classics on KOST, you can bet I'm probably singing along to it in the car. they're generally slow songs, so you can pick up the lyrics quickly and follow along easily. and its songs about passion, you can put it your heart into it. why dont they make love songs like this anymore? Bruno Mars, you are the man for putting your soul into songs without fear of ridicule!

3) Journey - Faithfully

2) Chris de Burgh - Lady in Red

1) no brainer ... The Sexaphone ft. George Michael - Careless Whispers

man i shoulda grown up in the 80s, considering i dont only like these slow ballads but also the techno pop from that decade. and now for a tribute to the 80s:

Stand By Me

*You are*

"and now ladies and gentlemen, one of the best songs from the 1960s."

Ohhh stand by me. If the skies that we look upon, should crumble and fall, and the mountains should crumble into the sea. I wont cry, I wont cry, no I wont shed a tear, just as long as you stand, stand by me. Come on and stand by me, stand by me! These guys are great, thanks for the link Chi Thuy.

Good and Bad Music I Heard On the Radio Yesterday

First of all, Happy Veteran's Day. BiA Salutes!

Now then, to the topic at hand, music on the radio. I like how songs over the last year have taken on two vibes: an 80's vibe and a techno vibe. Some examples of 80s type songs La Roux - Bullet Proof, Lady Gaga - Alejandro. And examples of techno songs include Enrique Iglesias - I Like It, and Rihanna's entire new album. I swear you could take Rihanna's voice out of her songs and they would still be good techno tracks.

Anyways, this one is interesting because I heard it on AMP and its not even closely related to pop, but its more like House Techno, which is one of my favorite types of music. I'm surprised that this music is becoming more mainstream. Yay for me

And then I heard this on the Kevin and Bean morning show on KROQ. She was made famous in South Park, but Wing has reached a new high (of lowness) in this song.

"hup hup hup, hup hup hup hup, hup hup, hup hup hup...."

I can't believe it

I heard this song floating around and finally figured out who sang it...
Damn it Lupe you did it again, awesome song, can't wait to hear the album.

I wish I could sleep with some waffles in my arms right now....

Asian Pride

Flashback: Junior year in high school. Mexican artists dominate the radio waves. Some songs are cool, but some are lame (Gasolina anyone?). I was wondering if Asians could ever make it big on the music scene. At that time, all I knew was Chuckie Akenz and the V-Unit, and their music sucks. After seeing that I thought killing myself would do the world a favor by removing one Vietnamese from the world.

But now the time has come! "We number 1! A-sia! Not B-sia!" (copyright Vincent Truong)

There's always a downplaying of Asians in culture in movies and music. Can't our comedians be normal? Did you notice the popular ones that white culture likes are the self degrading ones? Bobby Lee, Ken Jeong, Dat Phan. But that's another conversation for another day. For now... Congrats to Far East Movement for dominating KIIS, POWER, AMP, and also K-A-L-I 106.3

This song can get repetitive and doesnt make sense "slizzard, sizzurp" what the hell?? But I gotta admit the song has grown on me. You CANNOT listen to this beat and NOT get into it.

If you haven't seen the music video yet, check it out. The girl in the red dress is very ... charming. This video makes Koreans look pretty damn ballin. Maybe part one of Kim Jong Il's plan to take over the world?

i love summer songs!

I really really like Katy Perry's California Gurls right now. I am also sure that I will get tired of it in two weeks when it becomes overplayed on the radio. But the song is so catchy that I think I would like hearing this song every summer in the future, just like Lil Rob's Summer Nights. Actually this song is like the female compliment of Summer Nights. Songs like this make you just wanna kick it with the crew. And they capture the essence of summer perfectly.

The Lil Rob video is super ghetto, I think he could done a better job. But I guess he was going for the ghetto-ness. As for the girl in the Katy Perry clip, DAYMN GIRL.

Of course the other category of songs that never die are Christmas songs, if you can make a really good Christmas song, it will be immortalized. Think Wham's "Last Christmas" and Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas". Those songs will still be playing on 103.5 twenty years from now. Even if Wham and Mariah Carey were one hit wonders, the royalties from Christmas music is enough for retirement. I can't say the same for Lil Rob's one hit wonder...

Eargasm!
